Pioneers had to be brave, resolute and inventive to survive in the hostile environment in which they found themselves.
In my novel, Fiery Possession, Jo, the heroine and her widowed sister-in-law had no money to buy oil/kerosene for their lamps, therefore they had to compromise. This is where slush lamps would be used.
Slush lamps were made from containers half filled with clay, then topped up with mutton fat, and with a piece of worsted material wrapped around a stick to form a wick. They were smelly and smokey but did throw out light.
